It is 20 years since the first Farmers’ Market was set up in Milford. This was Waverley Borough Council’s Iain Lynch, then Economic Development Officer and Cllr. John Sandys’ response to the Agenda 21 directive, bringing ‘Local Food to Local People’. The first market was attended by over 10,000 people, causing tailbacks on the A3. Maybe you remember?
Sunday’s Market was a day of celebration for the SWSFM Co-Operative Ltd, despite the weather. There was a delicious cake baked by Sarah Jane Smythe of Baker & Cook. There were speeches by John Sandys, Iain Lynch and John Emerson, which all emphasised that shopping at Farmers’ Markets is your opportunity to know exactly where your food comes from to ask the producers any questions you might have and support to the local economy and maintenance of the landscape, which we all enjoy.
Georgina & John Emerson, Hunts Hill Farm, delicious home reared rare breed beef, pork and lamb are the only original stall holders still to be at the market, although Catherine and David May, Seale Rose Garden, joined at the second market. Celia Haynes from Blackburne & Haynes, delicious Jersey milk ice-cream, an original stallholder was also there to join in.
The Board would like to thank all their loyal customers and stallholders over the years and Charles Secretts’ who has generously provided the venue behind Secretts’ Farm Shop for all these years.
